Finally i've found a way for backing up/archiving twitter updates here:
It's basically http://twitter.com/account/archive.xml, where you have to log in to get the file.
Update (2008/04/15 18:32:52): Finally, thanks to Brad Kellett there is an online tool - TweetDumpr - to provide backup of your tweets in .cvs format.
